The Gowind family of corvettes (l-r) – action, 2,000t presence, 1,000t control and 2,000t combat.

The Gowind combat corvette (Multi-Mission Combatant) is equipped with full-scale mission systems for multi-threat response including a full anti-submarine warfare (ASW) suite with a towed array sonar.

The 2,000t Gowind presence corvette (High Seas Master) has a sustained capacity for long-range intervention and long periods at sea.

TLDM bakal guna kapal tempur lebih canggih

LABIS 23 Jan. - Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia (TLDM) tidak akan menggunakan kapal Meko A-100 yang menjadi asas kepada Kapal Ronda Generasi Baru (NGPV) untuk membangunkan skuadron Kapal Tempur Pesisir (LCS) sebaliknya, ia menggunakan model baru yang lebih canggih.

Sumber pertahanan memberitahu Utusan Malaysia, model baru itu mempunyai reka bentuk halimunan termoden yang setanding dengan keupayaan halimunan kapal friget kelas Delta milik Singapura yang diiktiraf selaku kapal perang tercanggih di rantau ini selain, memiliki kemampuan tempur tiga dimensi yang mantap.

Jelasnya, pembinaan LCS daripada model baru tersebut juga akan membolehkan negara menguasai pembuatan kapal perang termoden sekali gus, memenuhi tuntutan pertahanan abad ke-21 yang menekankan kepada ciri-ciri halimunan kerana kerajaan bukan sahaja membeli kapal tersebut tetapi teknologinya sekali.

"Sebuah kapal akan dibina di negara asal syarikat pengeluar tersebut iaitu di Perancis, manakala baki lima lagi kapal akan dibina oleh syarikat tempatan iaitu Boustead Holdings Berhad yang mana surat tunjuk minat (LOI) sudah pun diserahkan kepada syarikat ini.

"Kita memilih kapal ini kerana ia mempunyai keupayaan tempur termoden sesuai dengan kehendak TLDM memandangkan kapal-kapal perang negara serantau juga sudah memiliki teknologi terkini dan langkah ini bertujuan bagi menjaga perairan negara terutama di Laut China Selatan," katanya di sini hari ini.

Sumber itu bagaimanapun enggan mendedahkan lanjut mengenai spesifikasi sebenar kapal perang itu tetapi rata-rata penganalisis pertahanan tempatan menjangka kerajaan akan memilih Kapal Kelas Gowind buatan DCNS iaitu syarikat perkapalan sama yang membina kapal selam pertama negara.

Selain dibina dengan aplikasi teknologi halimunan, Kapal Gowind yang sepanjang 105 meter juga mampu membawa 16 peluru berpandu pertahanan udara jarak sederhana (50 kilometer) sama ada Aster 15 atau Mica RF; lapan peluru berpandu antikapal (Exocet, Harpoon atau RBS-15 MK.3) serta torpedo.

Pada masa yang sama, kapal berkenaan juga boleh membawa helikopter serta berupaya menjadi kapal induk kepada semua jenis pesawat tanpa pemandu (UAV) bagi tujuan pemantauan laut.

Ditanya mengenai apakah jenis persenjataan yang akan dipasang pada kapal perang tersebut, sumber tersebut berkata, pihak TLDM sedang mengkaji perkara berkenaan tetapi beliau yakin, jenis peluru berpandu sedia ada akan digunakan kecuali melibatkan pertahanan udara.

Sebelum ini, Menteri Pertahanan, Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi dilaporkan memberitahu, kapal LCS yang bakal dibina bagi memperkukuhkan perairan negara tidak lagi mengguna pakai konsep fitted for but not with seperti aplikasi pada kumpulan pertama kapal NGPV jenis KD Kedah.

Kuala Lumpur 21 Jan:Markas Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia hari ini mengesahkankan,Kapal BM 5 berjaya menyelamatkan kapal MT BUNGA LAUREL yang dirampas lanun di perairan Teluk Aden.

　Dalam satu kenyataan akhbar,kejadian ini berlaku pada 21 Jan 2011.

　Kapal MT BUNGA LAUREL adalah kapal jenis Chemical Tanker yang disewa oleh MISC bagi membawa muatan minyak pelincir dan ethylene dichloride dari Timur Tengah ke Singapura.

　Kejadian berlaku pada 20 Jan 11 jam 11:40 malam, kira-kira 300 batu nautika Timur negara Oman, 2 jam selepas Kapal MT BUNGA LAUREL dipisahkan di kawasan ‘selamat’ setelah selesai diiringi Kapal Auxiliary TLDM BM 5 melalui perairan Teluk Aden.

　Kapal MT BUNGA LAUREL telah dinaiki oleh 7 orang lanun yang berasal dari Somalia bersenjatakan senapang AK-47 dan pistol dengan menaiki bot jenis ‘skiff’. Dalam masa yang sama, pihak lanun dipercayai menggunakan sebuah kapal induk bagi melancarkan serangan ini yang secara keseluruhan melibatkan seramai 18 orang lanun.

　Krew Kapal MT BUNGA LAUREL sempat mengaktifkan Ship Security Alert System sebelum berlindung di bilik keselamatan khas yang terletak berhampiran bilik jentera kapal.

　Bertindak dari pangilan kecemasan ini, Kapal Auxiliary TLDM BM 5 yang berada kira-kira 14 batu nautika dari Kapal MT BUNGA LAUREL bergegas ke tempat kejadian untuk mengamankan keadaan.

　Helikopter Fennec TLDM yang dilancarkan dari Kapal Auxiliary TLDM BM 5 turut terlibat di dalam operasi ini dengan memberi bantuan pemantauan dan tembakan dari udara.ke arah kapal induk lanun telah berjaya menghalangnya dari memberi bantuan kepada lanun di atas Kapal MT BUNGA LAUREL.

Kerosakan kapal induk dan kecederaan pada lanun yang berada di atasnya pada ketika ini tidak dapat dipastikan oleh sebab serangan dilakukan pada waktu malam.

Pasukan Perlindungan Khas ATM yang berada di atas Kapal Auxiliary TLDM BM 5 telah diatur gerakkan untuk menggempur lanun di atas Kapal MT BUNGA LAUREL

Perlindungan Khas ATM berjaya menawan kembali dan menyelamatkan semua 23 orang krew Kapal MT BUNGA LAUREL. Seramai 3 orang lanun mengalami kecederaan di dalam kejadian ini dan diberi rawatan di atas Kapal Auxiliary TLDM BM 5.

Pasukan Perlindungan Khas ATM telah berjaya mengamankan keadaan di dalam masa 2 jam selepas Kapal MT BUNGA LAUREL dinaiki lanun tanpa melibatkan sebarang kecederaan di pihak Pasukan Perlindungan Khas ATM.

China plants flag in south sea amid disputes

BEIJING: China said on Thursday, Aug 26 it had used a small, manned submarine to plant the national flag deep beneath the South China Sea, where Beijing has tussled with Washington and Southeast Asian nations over territorial disputes.

The submarine achieved the feat during 17 dives from May to July, when it went as deep as 3,759 metres (12,330 ft) below the South China Sea, the official China News Service said, citing the Ministry of Science and Technology and State Oceanic Administration.

Chinese news reports did not say where the submarine went, whether it visited disputed waters, or why the announcement was held off until now. It was the first time a Chinese submersible vehicle has gone that deep, said the reports.

China, Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Taiwan all stake claims to territory in the South China Sea, which holds potentially big energy sources and is a major shipping route. All except Brunei have a military presence in the area, and the boundary claims have sparked naval clashes in the past.

The submarine test underscored China's ambitions to join the race for resources in the ocean depths.

"This success also shows that our country has become one of the handful possessing deep-sea manned submersible technology," Liu Feng, the engineer in charge of the deep-sea dive, told television news.

The South China Sea covers an area of more than 648,000 sq miles (1.7 million sq km), with more than 200 mostly uninhabitable small islands, rocks and reefs. It reaches depths of up to 4,000 metres, according to Chinese government surveyors.

The sea holds valuable fishing grounds and as-yet largely unexploited oil and natural gas fields.

China accused the United States of meddling after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton raised the territorial claims in the sea at a regional forum in July, and said Washington backed a multilateral approach to resolving them.

In late July, Chinese naval forces carried out drills in the disputed southern waters. — Reuters

Astros II: Kuasa membunuh digeruni musuh

Astross II mula memasuki perkhidmatan tentera darat pada Mac 2002.

PERANG Hizbullah-Israel pada 2006 membuka mata semua pihak tentang berkesannya Sistem Pelancar Roket Berganda (MLRS) sebagai senjata strategik yang ampuh.

Senjata tersebut bukan sahaja mampu mempengaruhi tempo peperangan tetapi juga meninggalkan kesan psikologi menggerunkan berikutan skala kuasa pembunuhnya yang sukar disekat.

Perang 34 hari itu, menyaksikan ratusan roket Katyusha yang hanya menggunakan teknologi era Perang Dunia Kedua ditembak ke bumi Israel tanpa dapat ditangkis oleh rejim Yahudi walaupun dunia mengakui kekuatan ketenteraan dan payung perlindungan udara negara haram tersebut merupakan antara terkuat dan tercanggih di dunia.

Malah, dalam tempoh 48 jam selepas perang tercetus, sebanyak 130 roket jenis itu membedil hampir seluruh ceruk bandar yang bersempadan dengan Lebanon, membunuh 39 penduduk awam Yahudi manakala ratusan lagi cedera sehingga memaksa rejim itu melaksanakan pelan kecemasan terhadap warganya.

Kesan kemusnahan hasil serangan balas yang tidak terduga itu, menyebabkan Israel terpaksa berundur daripada terus mengasak Hizbullah kerana pada masa yang sama negara Yahudi itu turut kehilangan seramai 119 tentera akibat dibedil menggunakan Katyusha selain senjata anti kereta kebal serta diserang hendap.

Mengambil iktibar daripada keberkesanan sistem MLRS yang digunakan Hizbullah, maka pada 3 Julai tahun lalu, Tentera Darat (TD) Malaysia secara rasminya menubuhkan sebuah Briged Artileri Roket yang mengoperasikan 36 unit MLRS, Avibras Astross II buatan Brazil.

Astross II sebenarnya telah terbukti berkesan membantu Iraq semasa menghadapi serangan bertali arus tentera bersekutu yang diketuai Amerika Syarikat (AS) semasa Perang Teluk 1991.

Briged tersebut ditubuhkan selepas TD menggabungkan Rejimen Artileri Diraja (RAD) 51 dan 52, iaitu rejimen yang bertanggungjawab mengoperasikan sistem Astross II dengan 53 RAD yang mengoperasikan radar Arthur bagi tujuan mengesan kedudukan musuh secara tepat setiap kali sebelum dan selepas tembakan dibuat.

Gandingan Astross II dengan radar Arthur meletakkan Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM) sebagai sebuah angkatan yang mempunyai sistem artileri paling ampuh dan digeruni di rantau ini.

Ini kerana Astross II yang diberi gelaran Keris oleh ATM memiliki kepelbagaian variasi roket iaitu daripada jenis SS-09 yang digunakan bagi tujuan latihan dengan jarak 11 kilometer (km), SS-30 (35 km), SS-40 (48 km), SS-60 (65 km) sehinggalah roket yang menjadi taring utama TD pada hari ini iaitu SS-80 (90 km).

Berbeza dengan Katyusha yang dicipta pada era Perang Dunia Kedua, roket SS-60 dan SS-80 dengan saiz kaliber 300 milimeter (mm) mempunyai kuasa membunuh yang lebih jitu iaitu setiap satu roket mampu memusnahkan secara total kawasan seluas empat padang bola sepak.

Manakala satu rejimen lengkap sistem itu dipercayai berupaya memusnahkan kawasan seluas 60 hektar dengan hanya sekali tembak secara berturut-turut roket jenis SS-60 dan SS-80 (setiap satu unit Astross mampu melancarkan empat roket berkaliber 300mm serentak).

Kemusnahan secara menyeluruh itu berlaku kerana setiap roket tersebut dimuatkan dengan kepala peledak pembawa kargo yang dikenali sebagai Dual Purpose Cargo Improved Munitions (DPCIM).

Setiap DPCIM pula boleh membawa sehingga 64 bom berangkai atau submunisi daripada pelbagai kategori termasuk peledak jenis letupan kuat (HE) sama ada bagi tujuan anti material atau anti landasan terbang.

Bagi peledak letupan kuat anti landasan terbang, setiap bom berangkai mengandungi peledak kepala jenis fius tertunda bagi merobek landasan konkrit sedalam 0.5 meter.

Ia bermakna hanya sebutir peluru SS-80 dengan DPCIM secara teorinya sudah mampu untuk melumpuhkan keupayaan taktikal sesebuah pangkalan udara musuh.

Pada masa yang sama, roket SS-80 juga boleh digunakan bagi tujuan menyerang kapal. Dalam hal ini, jika Keris dioperasikan di sepanjang pantai barat Semenanjung Malaysia, ATM mampu menutup terus laluan Selat Melaka.

Astross II (Keris)

Mula memasuki perkhidmatan TD pada 13 Mac 2002. Sebenarnya keputusan kerajaan membeli 18 unit pelancar Astross II (tidak termasuk kenderaan sokongan) dengan kos berjumlah RM791.92 juta, menjadi perdebatan pihak asing khususnya mereka yang tidak senang melihat proses pemodenan ATM.

Ini kerana pembelian itu menandakan buat pertama kalinya TD memiliki sebuah sistem persenjataan ofensif jarak jauh yang mampu menyerang musuh melebihi jarak 50 km berbanding keupayaan meriam medan FH-70 dan meriam howitzer 105 milimeter (mm) yang menjadi taring utama rejimen artileri bagi mempertahankan negara sebelum perolehan Keris dibuat.

Kebimbangan pihak asing itu berasas kerana Astross II didatangkan sekali dengan sejumlah 1,000 roket jenis SS-30, 224 buah roket SS-60 dan 576 unit roket SS-80 yang merupakan sebahagian daripada kontrak pembelian tersebut.

Kemudian, pada tahun 2006, iaitu selepas empat tahun TD mengoperasikan Astross II, Kementerian Pertahanan membuat pembelian susulan 18 unit lagi (juga tidak termasuk kenderaan sokongan) pelancar Astross II bagi menjayakan hasrat ATM untuk menubuhkan sekurang-kurangnya dua buah rejimen Keris.

Namun, sesuai dengan perkembangan semasa, TD mengambil langkah lebih ke hadapan apabila menubuhkan Briged Artileri Roket dengan diketuai Brigadier Jeneral Razali Mohd. Regen bagi memantapkan lagi inventori tempurnya.

Kemajuan ATM itu menyaksikan Singapura membeli sistem MLRS jenis Himars, buatan AS tetapi pada harga yang jauh lebih mahal daripada Keris.

Mengulas penubuhan itu, Panglima Medan TD, Leftenan Jeneral Datuk Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor menegaskan, pasukan itu relevan dan sejajar dengan keperluan strategik pemerintahan Medan TD yang memerlukan satu platform bagi menggandakan kuasa tembak sedia ada.

"Berbeza dengan unit artileri medan, Astross II menyediakan tembakan berselerak (mass) dengan kesan kemusnahan besar sekali gus meningkatkan kuasa tempur TD di medan perang.

"Oleh itu dengan adanya briged roket yang berpangkalan di Kem Gemas, bantuan tembakan dapat dikoordinasi dengan lebih baik, jitu serta berkesan," katanya baru-baru ini.

Pendapat itu turut disokong oleh penganalisis pertahanan yang juga Pengarang Majalah Tempur, Muhammad Fuad Mat Noor kerana katanya, Keris sebenarnya tergolong dalam senjata yang diklasifikasikan sebagai senjata pemusnah besar-besaran (WMD).

Jelasnya, dengan kemampuan itu, pemilikan Keris oleh TD membolehkan ATM mengatur corak peperangan jika konflik tercetus sama ada bagi tujuan menyerang atau bertahan.

Tambahnya, dengan setiap satu roket mengandungi puluhan bom berangkai ia mampu memusnahkan kawasan yang luas kerana corak serangannya adalah bertubi-tubi sehingga tidak mungkin senjata itu mampu ditangkis oleh pihak musuh.

"Astross II adalah senjata strategik yang sangat digeruni kerana corak serangan dan kuasa pemusnahnya. Apatah lagi sistem ini turut memiliki kemampuan mobiliti yang mantap bagi membolehkan ia melarikan diri sebaik sahaja serangan dilepaskan

"Keupayaan mobiliti ini mampu mengelakkan Keris daripada dimusnahkan oleh pesawat musuh dan taktik tembak kemudian lari lebih berkesan dalam persekitaran hutan tropika di negara ini.

"Lebih menakutkan, sistem ini juga mampu ditingkat upaya melalui penggunaan roket pintar yang boleh dipandu bagi meningkatkan lagi jarak serta ketepatan serangan," katanya.

Kesimpulannya, pembelian sistem roket Astros II membuktikan perancang pertahanan negara mengetahui kemampuan senjata itu untuk merobek titik kelemahan musuh khususnya negara yang terpaksa bergantung sepenuhnya pada kekuatan udara dan laut ekoran bentuk muka bumi yang tidak mengizinkan.

Apatah lagi, terdapat laporan bahawa pengeluar Astross iaitu syarikat Avibras sudah pun menjual roket-roket termoden daripada jenis TM (Peluru Taktikal) sebagai sebahagian pakej pembelian susulan 18 unit oleh ATM.

Walaupun laporan tersebut gagal disahkan, sekiranya ia menjadi kenyataan, roket jenis itu mampu membunuh sasaran bersaiz kompeni atau seramai 200 tentera dari jarak 150 km.

Maka, atas dasar itulah mudah untuk kita memahami kenapa Singapura begitu berminat untuk membeli sistem penangkis mortar dan roket yang dicipta oleh Israel. Tetapi dengan puluhan roket dilancarkan serentak dan ditambah pula dengan ribuan bom berangkai tiada sebarang sistem sebenarnya mampu menangkis ancaman MLRS dengan berkesan.

Nearly three miles above the turquoise waters of the South China Sea last July, U.S. Marine Lieutenant Colonel Dan Shipley eyed the dim outline of a fast-approaching Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 Fulcrum. Flying with the Royal Malaysian Air Force on a training mission, Shipley had been tracking the MiG by radar from the cockpit of his Boeing F/A-18D Hornet. While Shipley and Captain Justin Archibald, the Hor-net’s weapons and sensors officer, could have tried to simulate firing an air-to-air missile at the MiG from a distance, the war game required that the two confirm with their eyes that the MiG really was a MiG, and not a friendly military aircraft or an unarmed civilian airplane.

The Hornet and MiG rocketed past each other at a combined velocity of nearly 1,000 mph, granting each side a clear, albeit fleeting, view of the opposing jet. Both fighter pilots banked hard, each trying to maneuver into position first and stay there long enough to make the other one fall victim to an air-to-air missile or a volley of cannon rounds.

The MiG went nose-high, its pilot relying on the Fulcrum’s superior thrust-to-weight ratio to vertically outrun the Hornet. Anticipating this, Shipley had pulled the Hornet’s nose up and torqued the jet inside the trajectory of the MiG, a maneuver generating 6.8 Gs. Fifteen seconds and two high-G turns later, with the tail of the MiG directly ahead and the distinctive squeal in his headset telling him the infrared seeker in one of the Hornet’s missiles had a lock, Shipley squeezed a red trigger on his control stick, sending a signal to fire. Forty-five seconds into the engagement, the Hornet’s mission computer confirmed a simulated kill.

Later that day, Shipley and Archibald met up with the MiG pilot, Major Ahmad Khusairi bin Ahmad Fadli, in an air-conditioned briefing room at Malaysia’s Kuantan Air Base, about 150 miles east of Kuala Lumpur. While the three aviators discussed the day’s mission and analyzed data from the two aircraft’s computers, the F/A-18 and the single-seat MiG-29 were prepped for the next day’s training flight.

For three weeks each summer, in an exercise known as Air Warrior, the aviators of a Marine Corps Hornet squadron duel with the fighter pilots of the Royal Malaysian Air Force, the only MiG-equipped foreign air force that Marine aviators train with overseas on an annual basis. Accompanying the Hornets to Kuantan Air Base are elements of a C-130J Super Hercules transport and inflight refueling squadron, part of an air controller squadron, and logistics support personnel. Each year a different Hornet fighter squadron arrives in Malaysia for the exercise; last year, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (All Weather) 225, based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar near San Diego, California, was chosen to participate.

The U.S. aviators come to Kuantan realizing that because they fly more often than the Malaysians, they are more seasoned, particularly since almost all have actual combat experience. But Air Warrior focuses on air superiority sorties, which the Marine pilots have typically flown only against other U.S. aviators and aircraft. “I’ve trained against Air Force F-16s, F-15s, even the F-22 Raptor, but this is the first time with the Fulcrum,” says Shipley, the executive officer of 225 and a former Blue Angels demonstration pilot. “It is just a phenomenal experience for us to see how a MiG actually performs.” The experience might one day be critical for U.S. pilots, given that the MiG-29 is flown by various U.S. adversaries, including Syria, Iran, Cuba, and North Korea.

Air Warrior, however, is far more than a tactical exercise involving the forces of two friendly nations. The South China Sea is a region where the United States might engage an enemy in a future conflict, so it pays for the military to build allies there—the facet of Air Warrior that will pay the biggest long-term dividends. “By deploying to Malaysia, operating there, and then redeploying there, year after year, we’re not only honing our skill-sets used in that particular exercise, but building and bolstering our relationships in that part of the world,” says Lieutenant Colonel Rob Scott, chief of the future operations group at the Pentagon’s Plans, Policies, and Operations Department for the Marine Corps.

The U.S. ground crews assigned to Air Warrior must prepare for a challenging tour of duty at Kuantan Air Base. Because there were no hangars available to the U.S. maintenance crews, they had to work outside in oppressive heat and humidity. Each day began early, with the maintenance teams wiping thick beads of dew from the Hornets’ canopies. By 9:30 each morning on the flightline, every crew member’s olive drab T-shirt was soaked with sweat. By noon, the pounding sun had driven all but a few crew members into the shade. “One of the things the staff had to look out for was to make sure the maintainers didn’t become heat casualties—that they constantly were drinking water,” says Sergeant Major Ron Halcovich. “The maintainers, once they get working, will forget about everything else that is going on around them.” Fortunately, during the three weeks of Air Warrior, there were no heat casualties.

“This is comparatively an austere environment,” says Major Peter McArdle, 225’s maintenance officer. “It is more austere than Iraq, for instance, in terms of services available and conditions.” McArdle explains that air bases in Iraq, such as Al Asad, which is controlled by U.S. forces, are essentially kept to the same standards as those in the States. “Training in an austere environment is good for the Marines to learn how to operate with limited parts support, limited ground support, smaller ramp space than they’re used to,” says McArdle.

One of the greatest hazards for the Hornets during Air Warrior came from a virtually invisible source: FOD—foreign object debris. A close inspection of the Kuantan flightline reveals chunks of broken concrete every few feet. Most of the pieces are pebble size, but even a paper clip, if sucked into an intake, can destroy the turbine blades of a Hornet’s engines, grounding the craft. Each day of Air Warrior, the Marines spent time doing “FOD sweeps,” shoulder-to-shoulder walks to scan the pavement for debris.

MiG-29s, on the other hand, have special engine intake louvers that block foreign objects, so the Malaysians don’t rank FOD removal nearly as high in priority as U.S. aviation units do.

In Air Warrior engagements, each side consists of one to three aircraft; sometimes the two sides are equally matched and sometimes they are lopsided, with one aircraft, for example, trying to defend itself against two opponents. Regardless of the number of aircraft, all engagements begin the same: After takeoff, the MiGs and Hornets climb to 15,000 feet. Traveling at 350 knots (about 400 mph), they maintain a separation from each other of about a mile. The agreed-upon “hard deck” lies 5,000 feet above ground level; if a fighter flies below 5,000 feet, it has “crashed.” The two sides split, and once out of visual range, the high-G dance begins: Each turns toward the other, with each pilot trying to get a tactical advantage over the other, putting his aircraft in position to fire its weapons. (The U.S. fighters are equipped with Sidewinder missiles stripped of motors and warheads. The MiGs are flying “slick,” without their usual array of air-to-air missiles.)

While each engagement evolves uniquely, both sides follow the same approach: Work the aircraft for all of its advantages over the other, and try to deny the opponent from working his advantages over you. Since the MiG-29 and F/A-18 are fairly evenly matched, victory usually boils down to pilot skill.

“The Americans have better radar, better weapons, so we try to get in close,” says Major Patricia Yapp Syau Yin of the Malaysian air force, recounting a one-on-one engagement she had against a Hornet. “Try to defeat their radar capabilities by doing aggressive moves—zooming in. We have to try to roll in behind them, not roll in front of them. Weapon-wise, software-wise, they are one up. But power-wise, we are one up.” The MiG-29N that the Malaysians fly has a top speed of Mach 2.3 and a climb rate of 65,000 feet per minute; the F/A-18D’s maximum speed is Mach 1.8 with a climb rate of 50,000 feet per minute. The Hornet, however, is a more maneuverable aircraft, with a fly-by-wire control system and more advanced avionics and cockpit displays.

Captain Matt Wieand, a Hornet pilot who flew against Syau Yin, says: “You make the turn in and come into the merge, and you feel the adrenaline. It is like a high-speed chess game, and a little like a dance, that ultimately is all about energy management. You assess the MiG’s status, and if you misjudge the MiG’s energy state or its pilot’s options, you can get killed. You can trade potential energy [altitude] for kinetic energy [speed], and you always have to be thinking ahead. In this business, airspeed is life.”

Just minutes after training to shoot down one another, the MiGs and Hornets fly side by side, refueling. With a para-drogue-tipped fuel hose coursing behind the two refueling pods of a KC-130J Super Hercules, an F/A-18 and a MiG each plug in to refuel, with less than 50 feet separating the tips of the fighters’ wings. Each Hornet fluidly connects to the fuel line; the MiGs, however, which have been retrofitted with NATO standard fueling probes, have a tougher time, though after a few jabs, most of them eventually succeed. “This was my first time [refueling during Air Warrior]—not that good an experience,” says Major Nasruddin Khalid. “I plug in, and the hose disconnected. I tried twice until I reach my bingo fuel, then came back alone.”

Major Josh Vance, the operations officer of the refueling squadron, points out that during some missions, three Hornets and three MiGs were flying just yards from one another off the rear of the tanker while awaiting clearance to connect to the fuel hoses. Tight formation flying, the MiG pilots’ unfamiliarity with the KC-130J and the turbulence patterns generated by its six-blade propellers, and language issues (all Malaysian pilots speak English, but many have strong accents) make for an environment where a mishap—even a disaster—can happen in a fraction of a second.

But in the midst of the high-risk training and detailed coordination of aircraft and ground crews, the Malaysian and American aviators find common ground. “We talk the same language,” says Major Sebastian William of the Malaysian air force, referring to “pilot speak.” “Whatever we talk about is understood by both parties.”

“You have your comedians, your jokers,” says Marine Corps Major Chad Sund. “You have two groups of people who grew up in different cultures, but there are so many similarities.”

By the end of Air Warrior, the Marines had won virtually all of the air-to-air fights (with a few draws). But the Malaysians say they appreciate even the losses. “Every year we learn something new from the Americans,” says Major William. “With the limited number of assets, we can train only so much. Everything that we can take from the Americans, we will take.” The Hornet pilots too value the experience. “Training here is looked at the same way as training back in the States,” says Peter McArdle. “It doesn’t matter if we ‘killed’ everybody. We evaluate how we did and try to determine if and how we could do it better next time.”

Though he has more than 2,000 hours in the Hornet, Shipley was grateful for the opportunity to rack up more air time. “It’s as real as it can get without an AIM-9 actually coming off the rail,” he says. “I was excited. The guy I fought was actually pretty experienced. He was [call sign] Taro. We’re more experienced than [the Malaysian pilots], as we do a lot more practice. But Taro did a lot of out-of-plane maneuvering, not often seen from the Malaysian pilots. He was really good.” Shipley hopes to participate in a future Air Warrior.

“These exercises are tremendously valuable,” says retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Peters, a global military strategist and author. “They strengthen alliances at both the political and practical levels, but they also allow us to identify and address a wide range of problems in interoperability, from fuel nozzle mismatches to radio incompatibilities—the sort of down-and-dirty details that can make a huge difference in a period of crisis. Human relationships remain critical in 21st century warfare, and these exercises do at least as much to build trust between individuals as they do to rehearse common flight procedures.”

The learning and bond-building will continue, but—starting this year—with new equipment: The Malaysians are replacing their MiG-29s with the newer, more advanced Sukhoi Su-30, a fighter/attack aircraft flown by a number of countries, including some with which the United States has had tense relations (China and Venezuela). While Malaysia is officially neutral, it certainly leans toward friendly these days—due in large measure to Air Warrior.

Type 071 LPD

The Type 071 amphibious transport dock, or landing platform dock (LPD) was built by Shanghai-based Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard for the PLA Navy (PLAN). The first hull Kunlunshan (hull No.998) was launched on 22 December 2006 and commissioned by the PLAN South Sea Fleet on 30 November 2007. The ship is absed at Zhanjiang Naval Base in Guangdong Province.

The Type 071 LPD is the largest indigenously designed combat ship of the PLAN to date, with an estimated full displacement of 17,000~20,000 tonnes. The cargo capacity of the Type 071 is thought to be in the same range as the U.S. Navy Austin class LPD. If this estimation was correct, the Type 071 LPD can carry a marine corps battalion, including 500~800 troops, 15~20 amphibious armoured vehicles, and their associated logistic supplies.

The Type 071 LPD offers much increased sea lifting capacity and operational flexibility not possessed by the conventional tank landing ships (LST) in the current PLA Navy service. In a possible offensive operation to seize Taiwan, the Type 071 could be used to launch an amphibious assault from the Pacific side of the island, where the island’s defence is relatively weak. However, the Type 071’s role is not limited only to the Taiwan scenario. With its strong self-contain capability the LPD could operate far from friendly shores, projecting amphibious assets over distance of several thousand nautical miles. The plenty space onboard also allows additional communications equipments to be added for the ship to act as a fleet command and control centre in an amphibious operation.

In addition to traditional amphibious assault role, the Type 071 LPD could also be deployed for a whole range of non-traditional missions, for example, providing a sea-based platform for helicopters to send humanitarian aids to a disaster area and evacuate casualties and refugees from the area; or evacuating citizens from conflict zones.

Design

The docking system is located at the stern of the ship. A floodable bay can embark air-cushioned landing craft, conventional landing craft, and amphibious vehicles. Flooding of the docking area is achieved by ballasting the stern of the ship, allowing the landing craft to float. Preliminary models of the class suggest that the Type 071 was designed to embark 4 air cushion landing crafts (LCAC).

A large helicopter flight deck at the stern is enough to support the operation of two medium-size helicopters such as Z-8/AS 321Ja Super Frelon. The same helicopter has also been operating from the PLA Navy’s Type 072-II Yuting class tank landing ship, carrying 30 armed troops to the landing zone behind the enemy line on the beach. It is also worth noting that a full-scale mockup of a co-axial design helicopter was spotted on the ship’s flight deck while it was under construction, indicating a Russian design such as Kamov Ka-29 was also considered.

Weapon Systems

The ship is equipped with a single-barrel 76mm main gun, which appears to be a copy of the Russian AK-176. The gun is located on the bow deck. There are four Russian-built AK-630 close-in weapon systems (CIWS).

The ship is also equipped with four 50-tube 120mm multi-purpose rocket launchers, which could provide large area firepower against shore targets.

Sensors

Two Type 347G (one front, one rear) I-band radars provide fire-control for the 76mm main gun and four AK-630 CIWS. The air/surface search radar is the Type 360S E/F-band, mounted at the top of the forward mast.
